I was tempted to avoid painting this, because I found the pegs hard to draw (and I thought I’d stuff them up painting them), but I’m glad I didn’t. The colour in the photo’s not quite accurate (what looks like a red peg is actually bright pink), but you get the idea.
I enjoyed picking up two (or more) colours on the brush and making marks with them.
Painting is hard! Colour mixing, perspective, transparency, relative values, which brush to use for which effect, how long to leave a layer before painting on top of it… So many things to think about—and all the while the (acrylic) paint is drying!
But nothing worthwhile is ever easy. That’s why I’m here, learning.
Here’s the reference picture I painted from. (I like dark, dramatic skies.)
This was a fantastically informative episode on oils and oil painting. I particularly appreciated the Q&A on toxicity, but the whole thing was interesting. I’m strongly tempted to switch to oils—and Gamblin in particular—now, when my acrylics run out. My wallet might be the limiting factor though.
